Where is your office located?

Healthy Mind Psychology is in the heart of Barrington and within walking distance from the Barrington Metra stop, near the heart of Barrington’s downtown.

Our building has a dedicated parking lot. The building has a few small businesses and is very quiet and clean. My office is located on the first floor (left of the main door) and is fully accessible.

The office consists of a large private waiting room with complimentary coffee, tea, and water. I have carefully designed the waiting room and therapy office to be comfortable, open, and soundproof.

You can walk directly into the waiting area and make yourself comfortable when you arrive. When with another client, I close the door to my office. I will welcome you once I finish.

200 N Northwest Hwy., Suite 202 Barrington, IL 60010

What are your hours?
My hours are all day Monday-Friday with occasional evening openings.
How long are the sessions?
Typical sessions are 45-50 minutes.
Do you take insurance?

Healthy Mind Psychology uses a private-pay model, which allows me to provide services based on your needs rather than insurance company stipulations. Many of my clients prefer this method because it affords added confidentiality and flexibility.

Insurance companies require reporting diagnoses and justification for treatment that requires therapists to disclose their medical information. Further, insurance companies dictate treatment duration and frequency, limiting our ability to collaborate on treatment design and removing your privacy for insurance accounting.

Fortunately, many insurance plans have out-of-network coverage that reimburses you for a portion of the therapy fee (if you so choose). To aid my clients who elect to make out-of-network claims, I provide a superbill (i.e., summary bill) for submission to insurance companies. I also partner with Reimbursify, an app that lets you submit out-of-network claims easily from your phone or computer.

How do I set up an initial appointment?

The first step is to set up a free 15-minute phone consultation with me. We will get to know each other during this consultation and make sure Healthy Mind is a good fit for you.

You can schedule this consultation by calling me directly at (224) 655-2261, or you can click the “schedule an appointment” link below that allows you to schedule a 15-minute consultation now using my online scheduling tool.

What is your cancellation policy?

I have a 48-hour cancellation policy. You can cancel via phone or via your client portal. If you cancel more than 48 hours before your session, there will be NO cancellation fee, but cancellation after the 48-hour mark results in a full session fee charge.

If something comes up and you cannot attend in person but can meet via video, we can easily switch your appointment to telehealth.

Most of my clients elect to receive text or email appointment reminders 48 or 24 hours before their scheduled appointments. This reminder helps keep track of sessions, allowing for our busy lives.

With what types of clients do you work? Do you work with children or couples?
I work with adults of all ages. I currently do not work with couples or children. Occasionally, I work with older adolescents transitioning into college or turning 18.
Is therapy confidential?

Yes, in almost all instances, therapy is confidential. Therapy is a personal space where you can discuss and express yourself privately. I will document our sessions in a secure medical record system not accessible by outside persons or entities (e.g., insurance companies or employers).

Your health information requires protection by law and licensing board standards. Unless you provide explicit written consent, I will never discuss your treatment with anyone, including other medical professionals or family members.

I will only share your personal information if someone poses an imminent danger to themselves or others, or child, elder, or dependent adult abuse is reasonably suspected. The law requires this “mandated reporting” by all medical providers. Should such a situation occur, I will work with you directly to ensure your safety and the safety of others. Lastly, I may receive a subpoena for therapy documentation in very rare cases.

Should I bother contacting you if I need help with something not listed in your provided treatments?

Yes. My list of specialties is not exhaustive. I have expertise in treating various mental health concerns, including personality disorders (especially Borderline Personality Disorder), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, grief, chronic pain, and insomnia. I also work with people in medical care for diabetes, bariatric surgery, and weight management.

We will briefly discuss your needs during the initial phone consult and determine if Healthy Mind Psychology is a good fit.

How long does therapy take?

The duration of therapy depends on your specific needs and interest in therapy. At the outset of treatment, we will discuss your life situation, concerns, and goals and set a timeline that works for you. For example, if you have an upcoming move or are often traveling for work, we will design a treatment that meets your needs.

I recommend at least 12-16 weeks of regularly occurring therapy as a general guide. Research shows that three-to-four months of routine therapy effectively treats specific mental health concerns.

Length of therapy varies significantly from person to person. For some, five-to-six sessions are sufficient to provide relief during a difficult situation. Alternatively, many people benefit from an extended therapy relationship that supports you throughout multiple life transitions.

Do I have to be on medication?

Healthy Mind Psychology does not prescribe medication.

If you take a prescribed medication or seek to initiate medication, I can discuss referrals. I am also willing to work with your prescribing provider as you see fit. Your treatment at Healthy Mind Psychology is entirely confidential, and I will never speak with or refer you to another provider without explicit consent and request on your part.

It is not an expectation that you pursue medication. The interventions offered at Healthy Mind Psychology are effective, and in some cases, they are more effective than medication alone. There are certain situations in which medication may improve the effectiveness of therapy or is the ideal treatment for specific diagnoses (esp. medical diagnoses). We will discuss all available options together to make choices that feel right for you.

Am I likely to cry in front of you?

Many of my past clients share they avoided therapy because they didn’t want to cry or talk about emotions. I get it. The idea of a therapist prying out your feelings and pushing you to cry is mortifying. I wouldn’t want that for myself.

Healthy Mind Psychology is about empowering you and reinforcing a sense of control in your life. I will never force you to talk about things. Sometimes strong emotions come out in therapy; sometimes they don’t.

I don’t care whether you laugh, cry, or get angry. You are welcome here.

Do I have to tell you everything?

I will always let you know when I think that talking about something may be beneficial; but if you are not ready, we will wait and focus on areas that work for you.

You can express yourself in any way because this is your space. I have worked with hundreds of people suffering from complex issues in life, including assault, infidelity, suicide, self-harm, terminal illness, sexual functioning, sexuality, gender identity, domestic violence, and all types of substance use, to name a few.

I share this so that you know you are welcome here. No matter what you are dealing with, even if it feels “small,” I am ready to hear your story and support you in your life. Having someone you can truly open up to is so rare and valuable.

I would be honored to be that person in your life.

Do I need to put money in a “swear jar” if I use profanity?

I would probably double my yearly income – HaHa!

No, you don’t have to edit yourself or protect me from your language or ideas. I offer clients a space to share their thoughts and frustrations without fear of reprisal or consequence.

I have a personal disdain for stuffy medical environments, which is one reason why I left the hospital system. The offices were drab, and the culture was sterile, to put it nicely. My favorite providers are those I can talk to like a human and still receive respect. I strive to provide this for each of my clients.

Usually, most of my past clients have “let slip” a profane word early in treatment and immediately apologized. I say, “I don’t give a @&^!” and we both laugh. The word police does not have a warrant for my offices.

I will respect your style of communication and use language that feels genuine for me. My biggest risk is making terrible analogies, like trying to relate parenting to the most recent sci-fi book I’ve read. It’s okay to laugh at me; I do it all the time.

So, you were in the Navy. Does that mean I have to say the pledge of allegiance before each session?

I prefer the Star-Spangled Banner – HaHa!

Honestly, I am sensitive to military service being polarizing for some people. I joined the Navy because I saw how little support existed for veterans. Rather than wait for them to return home, I wanted them to have a competent, caring provider at their side. In the Navy and private practice, I keep my personal beliefs where they belong, outside the office.

I became a psychologist because I care about people and want them to live vibrant, satisfying lives. I take this seriously and have done my utmost to provide the best treatment possible, even when that meant putting on a uniform.

I am happy to be out of the Navy, but I bring the same dedicated passion into Healthy Mind Psychology. You are the expert on your life and what matters to you. I am here to help you reconnect to your beliefs, values, and goals, whatever those may be.

What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?

What do you mean? An African or European Swallow?

I obsessively watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail in middle school, and it serves as the foundation of my humor to this day – for better or worse!
